Considering the burgeoning commercial and critical successes of the mobile phone operating systems produced by Apple, RIM, Google and Palm, it’s not going too far right now to say that Microsoft, and its Windows Mobile OS is on its way to being very much the poor cousin of mobile telephony software. That however, may be set to change. At least, that’s what Microsoft would have you believe.
Next Monday, Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer will take to the stage at the Mobile World Congress to announce an ambitious raft of plans to reinvent the company’s entire mobile strategy.
Many of the plans are aimed at nothing more than bringing Microsoft up to the mark set by its competitors, there is, for instance, a plan to create a sort of Microsoft App Store. However, there are aspects of the plan that the company hopes will change the market considerably, the biggest of which being the prospect of a ‘Windows Phone.’
The strategy is to convince Windows users, i.e., most of us that a Windows phone is the most sensible option to go with our windows computer soft ware. As Todd Peters, head of marketing, puts it…
“We’re going to double-down on the Windows brand… When people go shopping in the future, we want them to ask specifically for a Windows phone.”
