Page Segmentation Part 3: The potential Advantages for Search Engines
The advantage of segmentation for search engines is increased relevance, and simplification of the process of assessment. The hope is that segmentation will provide almost a complete understanding of a page’s relevancy. Segmentation may also give search engines the ability to handle pages with more than one topic, even if those topics are completely unrelated in terms of language, though it’s important to note that I am speaking purely theoretically here.
Another advantage of segmentation is that it could allow search engines, if they can define the template of a site, to only crawl the necessary parts of that site, staying away from the irrelevant areas. This is good for them as they are expending less time and resources on doing stuff that doesn’t need doing, and good for site owners as it frees up search engine spiders to crawl their sites more regularly.
Anything that saves time and resources has the potential to be a real money saver and as such, you have to assume that the concept of segmentation will only grow in popularity if the global economy continues to decline. Another reason to expect its introduction sooner rather than later.
