In a move no doubt inspired by Apple’s ‘App Store,’ Palm have launched an online store from which users are able to buy various kinds of software for their Palm handsets. They’ve, slightly unimaginatively, called it ‘Software Store’ though it seems to be a pretty comprehensive service, boasting over 5,000 distinct software applications and games all purchasable from and usable on Palm devises.
This is a much improved user interface from Palm. Before this, users had to shop for new applications online, then download them to a computer, before loading the programme onto a device. Software Store cuts out the middleman which, I’ve got no doubt, will come as a relief to Palm users.
Strictly speaking, Software Store is actually two stores – since some Palm devices run on Windows Mobile and some run on Palm OS, there are therefore different stores for each operating system. Significantly, Palm have managed to beat Microsoft to the punch here, with Microsoft’s own offering to the App Store market still only in the ‘rumoured to be happening,’ stage. The company does claim however that there are over 18,000 apps available on Window’s Mobile, so it’ll be interesting to see it, if it ever does arrive.
