Page Segmentation Part 4: The Advantages for your Site and Consumers

17/01/09 9:00 AM

Yesterday I talked about the fact that segmentation allows search engines to save time and money, which may allow them to crawl your site more regularly and with greater ease once they have identified which parts of the site are important and which parts of the site they can ignore. However, there is a more tangible advantage to site owners and webmasters. Namely, the increased importance of content.

Once a search engine has used segmentation to identify the key areas of the site, ‘key,’ almost always meaning content rich, it will search and re-search those areas time and time. This makes content more important than ever.

SEO blogs, including this one, have been giving the ‘content is king’ lecture for ages. It has always been true, but now it is even more so. If you’ve been running a good site with lots of quality, optimised content then you may find yourself in a position to benefit from segmentation. If you haven’t, I advise you to rectify that, soon.

However, be warned. It won’t do to simply dump hastily written, incoherent or repetitive content onto your site. Segmentation algorithms will be able to pick up on this (I’ll explain in more detail in part 5).

This element of segmentation also benefits web users. Sites with lots of good content quite simply offer a better user experience. If segmentation encourages more webmasters to build good, content rich sites, rather than messing about with black hat SEO tactics then it can only be good.
