Pownce is Dead. Long live Twitter!
Maybe it was predictable, but Pownce, a microblogging site set up to compete with microblogging pioneer, Twitter, has finally given up the ghost. The Pownce team has been absorbed by blogging software company, Six apart, who have also bought the technology behind the site, though it is unknown what they paid for it. Pownce will finally cease to exist on the 15th of December.
18 months ago, the site’s debut was met by a flurry of media interest and, in its early days, Pownce was a very well respected tool which many people tipped to at least worry Twitter. However, it soon became clear that it wasn’t to be, as they failed to keep up the momentum and twitter went from strength to strength, rapidly dwarfing any pretensions that Pownce had.
There is some good news for the unfortunate souls who, so to speak, backed the wrong microblogging horse. Pownce have announced that they have arranged an export function which will allow users to export their messages to other blogging sites.
The death of their only real competitor would appear to secure Twitter’s place amongst social networking royalty like Facebook and MySpace, especially with Facebook planning to include them in their new Facebook Connect venture. The future looks bright for Twitter, they might even make some money.
