So that’s ease of use covered, what about security. Well, as far as that goes, Microsoft are calling IE8 their most secure browser to date and, based on the amount of features they have installed, it would seem like they have a point.
The new features include everything from phishing detection to private browsing. Microsoft has also built in protection against something called ‘clickjacking,’ a data theft threat so new that very few consumers have even heard of it – credit where credit’s due, nice one Microsoft!
The beefed up phishing detection includes a more thorough filter (SmartScreen) that takes the name of a page into account to a greater extent than it has before. It also features a full window warning when you stumble across a suspected phishing site. However, be warned, Smartscreen does use a database of phishing sites as a fairly large part of its filtering process so there is the obvious danger that some newer sites could fall through the cracks.
Overall I think that the new IE is coming along very nicely indeed. With Google Chrome gunning for them they needed to start taking the browser wars seriously. It looks as if they have.
