SEO School: Lesser known Techniques #1

12/10/09 2:47 PM

The other day in a brief moment of downtime, myself and the rest of the SEO department got to talking about just how many useful SEO techniques are overlooked, even by professional SEOs. Whether it’s because they’ve fallen out of fashion or they’re just not widely known about, it seemed strange to us that so much useful stuff is not widely known.

That’s why, this week, we in the Top Click Media SEO department have decided to devote our considerable talents to letting you in on some of the lesser known secrets of SEO. So without further ado…

#1. Combine Pages

The algorithm that determines PageRank is designed to filter a page’s rank evenly through the various links on a page. So, a page with five links will distribute one fifth of its authority, or ‘link juice’, to each link. Therefore, it doesn’t take a genius to realise that you need to keep the number of links to a minimum to avoid spreading your rank too thinly.

This used to be controllable with the ‘rel=nofollow’ tag, but now that Google are pretty much ignoring it, that tag is as good as useless. Therefore, to make sure all your pages receive the maximum rank possible we need to go back to slightly more old school techniques, the best being simply reducing the number of pages.

We’re not saying you should get rid of necessary pages, or try to say too much on one page, simply that you should use one page rather than two wherever possible. The best example of this is company information, a huge number of sites have separate pages for, ‘about us’, ‘contact details’ and ‘directions’ where perhaps one general ‘company info’ page might do the job just as well.

Have a look through your site, I bet there are a few examples like the above.
