The changing nature of Article Marketing

27/01/09 1:52 PM

We’re hearing a lot of concern from our customers about the fact, or at least the perception, that Google is paying less attention to article marketing links these days. Many of them have found that, whereas they used to be able to submit articles with only half unique content and reap the link benefits, they no longer can to the same extent.

Well, the truth is that Google have made some changes to the algorithm, these have been aimed at eliminating duplicate content, a common aspect of article marketing campaigns. They have also publicly trashed some article directories as low quality. It’s fair enough really, not even the most hardened SEO would claim that duplicate content provides a good user experience, Google are simply trying to improve the overall quality of the Internet.

The upshot is that it’s not as easy to get away with this kind of article marketing these days. If you persist with an aggressive article directory campaign, you could be wasting your time or even harming your rank. Basically, Google is wise to it, they can spot the duplicate content you’re sending out all over the web and ignore the links gained. Even if they don’t, those links will be very low quality.

The main factor however, is that this kind of thing makes it totally obvious that you are optimising your site. Gaining a load of links from notorious SEO link sources is almost the same thing as emailing Google and telling them that you’re an SEO trying to artificially manipulate your PageRank. Obviously not a good idea.

All that being said, article marketing can still be effective. It just has to be done in the right way, with realistic expectations.
