What you need on your page to make SEO work for you
In these blogs and as a company we talk an awful lot about link building and all sorts of other ways to build ranking outside of your site. Today however, I want to tell you about on-page SEO and, in particular, its critical components that must feature in your site in order to build your ranking.
First off, titles. Each page needs a specific HTML <title> tag that contains the key words you want your page to rank highly for. Keep your titles short (under 60 characters) and be sure to place the keywords at the start.
Secondly I want to talk about meta description tags. Each page needs a well written description (150 characters or less). This description can then be placed in the meta description tag. This isn’t about keyword optimisation – it exists purely to provide an intriguing blurb for the page when the result is displayed on Google.
Next let’s discuss headers. Every page needs an <h1> header which includes your desired keywords. A neat trick with headers is to vary from the keywords that appear in the title tag. Include the same words, just in a different form, such as plural if the title tag is singular.
This brings us nicely on to keywords. Your chosen keywords should feature several times within the main body of text on your page. Not so much that the writing suffers, but enough to help Google get the idea.
That’s the crux of it. I’m sure we’ll cover each of these points in detail at a later stage but for now that should be enough to tide you over.
So, what are you waiting for? Go and optimise your sites, people.
