It’s fair to say that Windows Vista has not been universally popular. In fact, for a lot of industry commentators, Vista-bashing has become a favourite bloodsport. One of the main complaints about vista is that it simply takes up too much space, is too much of a drain on the middle of the roads systems that most people run.
Such was the vitriol directed at this particular shortcoming it would have been unthinkable for Microsoft to ignore this concern with Windows 7, and indeed it appears they have not. A beta version of the operating system will become available for download on Friday. Microsoft have released the system requirements as follows, DX9 graphics support with 128 megabytes of memory, a 1GHz processor, 16GB of disk space and 1 GB of main memory.
The significant thing about these requirements is that they are very, very close to those required by Vista. This means that Microsoft have not used the around 3 years worth of improvement in technology since Vista was released as an excuse to create a larger, operating system. They are clearly hoping that over the past few years the average computer has improved to the level where it can run a Vista-sized system with no problems.
Will their gamble pay off? We’ll begin to see tomorrow.
