Around half of that remaining share of the search market belongs to two search engines – Yahoo, and Bing (formerly LiveSearch), the search engine run by software giant Microsoft.
In 2010 it was announced that the two Google competitors were merging to form one entity more capable of providing significant competition to Google.
For now, even their combined share of the market is still small in comparison with Google’s. However, these platforms have a few very clear advantages that allow them to punch above their weight, making them a very attractive prospect for any advertiser willing to look beyond the obvious.
Competition (or rather lack, of it):
Even though relatively speaking there there’s smaller number of people using these search engines, we’re still talking about many millions of searches a day. However, many companies simply ignore Bing and Yahoo, preferring to focus all of their time on Google.
You can turn this laziness to your advantage.
Competition for the vast majority of keywords is far less fierce on Yahoo and Bing than it is on Google which means that good positions for premium keywords can be easier to obtain. Whilst there may be a smaller slice of the pie, it could be a lot easier to grab!
Price:
Like Google, both Bing and Yahoo search marketing platforms use an auction system to determine the price of a click. Therefore, the lack of competition on these search engines usually means cheaper clicks. You could find that a sale generated through Bing or Yahoo costs a fraction of what it might through Google.
Differing Markets:
The people using Google are not the same people using Bing and Yahoo – it could be that the demographic using Bing and Yahoo are more suited to the product you are selling, allowing you to make more sales and a greater ROI.
